Auto mechanics, sometimes referred to as service technicians, perform a variety of services for automobiles. They also perform vehicle inspections to ensure your automobile complies with state mandated regulations. Because automobiles are much more sophisticated today, many employers prefer those who attend an accredited educational program and obtain credentials related to different types of vehicles, electronic systems, and repairs.
Automotive training schools are accredited by The National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence. Some training programs can be started in high school through the school’s vocational program, allowing students to earn a certificate or diploma and start working immediately after graduation. Most required courses take approximately 6 to 12 months to complete. An associate’s degree in automotive technology is also available, which takes about two years to complete. There are 31 accredited schools throughout the state of New Jersey.
Auto mechanics can earn a variety of credentials, allowing them to specialize in specific automotive technology or to become a master technician. Along with accrediting education programs and schools, The National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence also offers certifications that many employers recognize, increasing employment opportunities. Some schools in New Jersey also prepare students for credentialing. To obtain credentials, auto mechanics must pass one or several computer-based tests.
