To work as an auto mechanic in Michigan, you must complete a training program at an accredited school. This is a requirement if you want to become certified in auto mechanics and repair, and certification is required by the state. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there are more than 30 schools offering accredited or state-approved automotive technician programs in Michigan. As a student, you’ll be required to complete classroom studies and hands-on training in an approved automotive service center.
To work as an auto mechanic in Michigan, you must obtain certification and licensure. The most standard certification is offered through the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), which offers eight different areas of certification. However, automotive service technicians or mechanics may still be required to pass additional tests, according to the Michigan Department of State Business Licensing & Regulation Division. The type of tests that are required may vary from city to city and may also depend on the type of mechanic you wish to become. To be eligible to take the exams, you must have at least two years of experience or one year with equivalent training. ASE offers the following certifications:
