Diesel-new hampshireRequirements & Eligibility

Working as a diesel technician/mechanic can be accomplished through on-the-job training, but obtaining training at an accredited school can improve your chances for meaningful employment. Although there are a few different colleges in New Hampshire that offer automotive training programs, White Mountains Community College is the only New Hampshire school that offers a program focused on diesel repair and service. They offer an Associate in Science in Mobile Equipment Technology. Students who don’t wish to earn the degree can take advantage of the one-year certificate program offered at WMCC.

This program is accredited by the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) Foundation, an agency focused on providing high-quality educational programs. While the student will take courses in the classroom, a lot of the learning is done in the automotive lab to obtain hands-on training working on diesel engines and parts. The program also includes a paid co-op so students can get actual working experience at a dealership. Course topics may include heavy duty electrical systems, diesel power systems, welding, applied hydraulics and failure analysis to name a few. You’ll also take some business courses like accounting, database management and managerial finance.

Application Process & Costs

The application process for the diesel mechanic program is relatively easy because all the student does is submit a completed application and pay the application fee. The only requirements the program has are that the student submit high school transcripts and take a placement or assessment test to determine if any additional courses must be taken. Students should have adequate background in mathematics.

The cost of the program at WMCC depends on if students take the certificate option or pursue the associate degree. To earn the degree, the student can expect to pay around $16,318 over two years as well as about $1,500 for books and from $1,500 to $2,500 for tools. The one-year certificate option costs students about $7,652 plus the cost for books and tools, which the student can keep.
