For as long as automobiles exist, auto mechanics will always be in demand. For that reason, many individuals who are mechanically-inclined seek out training to begin a career in automotive repair. Every auto mechanic needs training; therefore, applying to a certified education program is typically the first step toward a career. The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) is a nonprofit organization that compares automotive education programs against national standards and issues accreditation to schools. Prospective students should conduct thorough research on the training institutes they are considering attending to verify that the curriculum offered is certified by NATEF.
How to Get Certified in Pennsylvania
Technicians may earn certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. The credential itself is commonly referred to as ASE certification. Automotive repair technicians may become certified by first completing either two years of on the job training or a combination of one year of on the job training and completion of a two-year degree in auto repair.
The average mean annual salary for automotive repair technicians in Pennsylvania is $37,260. The top-paying industries for auto repair technicians are aerospace, courier and express delivery services, and natural gas distribution. However, most certified mechanics work in automotive repair and maintenance. Auto mechanic jobs are expected to grow nine percent through 2022, and the expected outlook is positive for qualified individuals who will be entering the job market.
