Auto mechanics inspect, repair and perform maintenance on cars and light trucks. They are knowledgeable about engines, heating and air conditioning, electrical systems, brakes, fuel systems, and are skilled at using technology to analyze and diagnose problems. During a typical day, an automotive service technician performs a combination of tasks that include physical labor and customer interactions. While some companies will provide on-the-job training, many require an associate’s degree in order to be hired.
The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) is a non-profit that accredits automobile, heavy truck and collision repair programs at community and technical colleges across the United States. These programs meet industry standards to prepare students to pass certification tests and for a successful career.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offers an extensive series of tests for certification in eight areas as an auto mechanic. Most people need a minimum of two years of hands-on work experience and everyone must successfully pass ASE tests in order to achieve certification.
