How to Get Certified in Iowa
Employees with the proper education earn more and have a better employment rate, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Although the state does not require a special license for mechanics, customers prefer trained workers. Schools may offer specialized certification, such as the Daimler Chrysler CAP, Ford ASSET and GM ASEP programs at the Des Moines Area Community College or the Toyota T-TEN program at Kirkwood Community College. Some offer hybrid and electric car technology training.
The BLS estimated in their May 2013 report that the Des Moines area has a mean annual salary of $40,900 with about 1,500 mechanic jobs. Davenport, Iowa metropolitan area employs over 1,000 mechanics at an annual mean salary of $38,700 and a job growth estimate of about 10 percent. The western area around Council Bluffs, Iowa offers about 2,000 jobs with an annual mean wage of approximately $40,000 and a higher job growth rate at almost 11 percent.
