Fresno Area Universities with Associate Degrees in Automobile Technology (on-campus)

Fresno City College offers an Associate of Science in Automotive Technology in addition to several certificate programs. The Associate of Science program requires 68 hours of coursework and is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). This program is also recognized by GM as a General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program. The certificate programs at Fresno City College are directed toward three principal areas: chassis, powertrain and emissions. This program also offers a hands-on internship program in which the student is placed in a real working environment.

College of the Sequoias
Not far from Fresno, the College of the Sequoias offers an associate degree program, seven different skill certificates and Certificates of Achievement in Automotive Technology through their Industry and Technology Department. The latter requires completion of 38 credits, usually completed in one year. Their courses include powertrain technology, brake systems, air conditioning systems and suspension/steering.

The Associate of Science in Automotive Technology is a two-year program and, according to their website, “is intended for students who plan to enter the workforce upon graduation”. Areas of specialization include engine performance, suspension and steering systems, transmissions, and general automotive technology.

Reedly College, about twenty-five miles from Fresno, also offers a two year program and is certified by Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the definitive certification body in the industry. Reedly also offers a certification program as well as an Automotive Technician Associate of Science degree.

In comparing these three schools, the costs of attendance and the completion rates are similar. Financial assistance has been provided for up to 80% of their students.

Accredited Online Schools for Auto Mechanic Education

In addition, there are online schools that prepare the student for ASE Certification in Automotive Mechanics and Technology. Two of these are Penn Foster Career School and San Joaquin Valley Junior College. These programs offer flexible scheduling when in-class training is not convenient.
